Accessing Archives via an Integrated IMAP Server

With MailStore's integrated IMAP server, you can access the MailStore archive in read-only mode using any email client that supports IMAP. This provides a suitable way to access the email archive not only by using many alternative email clients on any operating system (e.g., MacOS or Linux), but also through email applications running on Android or iOS devices. It is not necessary to install the MailStore Client on user machines.

Accessing Archives via an Integrated IMAP Server

Prerequisites for Using the Integrated IMAP Server with MailStore

Enabling and configuring the integrated IMAP server is done using the MailStore Server Service Configuration. All IMAP-enabled email clients that support encrypted connections are supported, as the integrated IMAP server rejects login via unencrypted connections.

Note: When using Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) (AD FS) to authenticate users during login, accessing the archive via IMAP is not possible due to technical reasons.

Accessing the Integrated IMAP Server

The integrated IMAP server allows users to access the MailStore Server using the following settings, unless configured otherwise:

  • Incoming Mail Server - The hostname or IP address of the MailStore server
  • Port - The standard IMAP port 143 is used for STARTTLS encrypted connections (open TLS). The standard IMAP port 993 is used for implicit TLS encrypted connections.
  • Username - The name of the MailStore user.
  • Password - The password required to access the MailStore server. If a user has integrated authentication with MailStore, and Multi-Factor Authentication is enabled, an application password must be used for authentication.

Note: In addition to configuring the incoming mail server, email clients usually also require configuration of the outgoing mail server. In this case, using the same data as an existing email account will make it easier to process more emails from the email archive.
