Microsoft Published Emergency Fix for Windows Server

Microsoft released an urgent out-of-band update to fix a known issue that caused Windows domain controllers to lock up after applying the March 2024 security updates.

Since last Tuesday's Patch Tuesday, some servers have been stopping and restarting due to a memory leak in the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) process. Microsoft acknowledged the issue and stated that all domain controller servers with the latest updates were affected.

At the end of last week, Microsoft released emergency bulk updates that resolved the issue and prevented affected servers from restarting. The updates that fixed the problem are as follows:

• Windows Server 2022: KB50537422;
• Windows Server 2016: KB5037423;
• Windows Server 2016 R2: KB5037426.
