What Is SBC? Sintel Turnkey SBC Services

What is SBC?

Session Border Controller (SBC) is a security and control layer positioned at the boundary between two networks for IP-based voice and video traffic. When connecting your corporate PBX to the operator, your call center to the cloud platform, or your network to another operator; it monitors, transforms, and protects signaling (SIP) and media (RTP).

A firewall "passes" SIP traffic; SBC, on the other hand, interprets it. The key difference is whether a single misconfiguration could turn into international call traffic reflected on your monthly bill.

Why is SBC necessary?

  • Protection against toll fraud and attacks. SIP scans, registration attacks, and DoS attempts are stopped at the network boundary; suspicious call patterns are blocked based on rules.
  • Topology hiding. Your internal network addresses, PBX brand, and numbering plan remain invisible to the other side.
  • Interoperability. Different manufacturers' SIP interpretations may not match. SBC ensures compatibility through header manipulation and transcoding.
  • Quality of Service and measurement. Call quality metrics, registrations, and reports are collected from a single point.
  • Redundancy. Calls are maintained even if a connection drops, thanks to operator or site-based routing.

Sintel’s approach: turnkey solution

Sintel positions SBC not as a box product but as a delivered operational solution. Scope:

  1. Analysis and design — ascertaining existing PBX, operator connections, session needs, and redundancy scenarios
  2. Licensing — selecting the right manufacturer and the appropriate number of sessions based on needs
  3. Installation and integration — SIP trunk definitions, routing rules, security policies
  4. Testing and commissioning — end-to-end verification of call scenarios
  5. Operational support — monitoring, version management, incident handling

Supported platforms

Platform Usage area
Ribbon Enterprise and operator class SBC; certified integration with cloud communication platforms
TelcoBridges ProSBC High-capacity operator scenarios; 1+1 Master/Standby redundancy architecture
Mediatrix (Media5) Branch and hybrid setups requiring analog/ISDN transition

Sintel is the long-standing local partner of these manufacturers in Turkey; licensing, versioning, and support processes are directly handled through the manufacturer.

Cloud SBC (SBC-as-a-Service)

We offer SBC in a service model for organizations who do not want to invest in hardware:

  • Geo-redundant setup with primary Istanbul and secondary Ankara
  • Scalable session-based capacity with monthly subscription
  • Certified intermediary for Turkish operator connection of cloud call center platforms (e.g., Genesys Cloud)
  • Installation, monitoring, and maintenance handled by Sintel

This model is especially preferred by organizations transitioning to cloud call centers but needing to retain their numbers and relationships with local operators.

Typical usage scenarios

  • Corporate PBX – operator connection: Secure termination of SIP trunk
  • Cloud call center migration: Moving local numbers to the cloud platform
  • Operator-to-operator connection: Normalization of signaling and capacity control in wholesale voice traffic
  • Public sector modernization: Moving existing analog/ISDN lines to IP, preserving numbering plans
  • Multi-location setups: Connecting branches to centralized routing and security policies

Working with the operator side

Sintel’s expertise in solutions, combined with group company Karel İletişim's BTK-licensed fixed telephone and internet operator services, allows number assignment, SIP trunking, and SBC layer to be managed from a single provider. The benefit for organizations is having one accountable partner instead of coordinating with three different suppliers.

How to start?

Share your current PBX brand, simultaneous call capacity needs, and number of operator connections; we’ll prepare a proposal with a suitable architecture and session count.
